Genevieve Dawson is a songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist from Scotland now based in London. She studied music at the University of Oxford specialising in composition, and went on to Goldsmiths, University of London, to continue her studies, following in the footsteps of alumni including James Blake and Rosie Lowe. It was there she met her collaborators and band mates Rick Leigh (Denai Moore), Huw Bennett (Susso, Minyanta) and Donna Thompson (Alabaster de Plume, Bellatrix) and began writing, recording and performing her own music.
In 2017 Genevieve self released her EP ‘Things My Mother Tells Me’ to widespread critical acclaim from the independent folk scene. “Sounding this good on a debut single, should be, and quite possibly is, a crime against long-suffering musicians everywhere, not that we’re complaining.’ For the Rabbits.
Her EP spawned a small but loyal following, leading to a string of sold-out headline London shows and international festival appearances (Greenbelt, North Sea Jazz, Melodica Reykjavik). Expanding her sound to a more richly textured, jazz influenced sound, Genevieve was the recipient of the Drake Yolanda Award for emerging artists in 2019 - allowing her to complete her independently produced debut album ‘Letters I Won’t Send’, recorded entirely in a self-built studio in a church with an ensemble of some of London’s best folk and jazz musicians.
The release of the hypnotic and deeply moving single, ‘Mountain’ in 2020 led to support from BBC Radio London and 6 Music on Tom Robinson and Gideon Coe’s prime-time shows.
As a singer she has recently collaborated with Jesca Hoop, Charlotte Church and Maya Youssef as a member of London Contemporary Voices and has supported fellow folk-indie artists including Mesadorm, The Magic Lantern, Sam Brookes and Ferris and Sylvester.
London-based singer Cherri V has been bubbling on the RnB and soul scene over the past year, dropping milky cuts like 'Swimming' with RoxXxan and 'Leave Me Be'. She has now released her new EP 'Brown Eyed Soul Vol. 1'. Comprised of 8 songs, musically the EP embodies jazz-laced soul, tropical pop, Hip-Hop and more. Enlisting the production talents of Hannah V, XVR BLCK and Da BeatFreakz, the record also features guest appearances by Terri Walker and Sincerely Wilson. Taking the sound of soul and continuing to stretch it outwards, 'Brown Eyed Soul Vol. 1' simultaneously keeps the core tradition of RnB whilst erasing any placed boundaries on the genre.
It’s been a long time since the UK could with conviction, boast about the emergence of a true soul singer.
